STEP 1

Open Settings → Integration

From the bottom tab bar tap Settings, then Integration. You'll see Practice Management showing Not connected. Tap it.

STEP 2

Pick Open Dental

A sheet opens with Open Dental (live today), Dentrix, and Eaglesoft (coming soon). Tap the green Generate my unique key button.

STEP 3

Copy the key

DentBooks generates a one-of-a-kind API key for your practice. Tap Copy to put it on your clipboard. Keep this DentBooks screen open — you'll come back to it in step 7.

In Open Dental: Setup → Advanced Setup → API

Switch to your Open Dental client on the office computer. From the top menu, choose Setup → Advanced Setup → API. The API Setup dialog opens.

Tip Make sure you're on the office computer where Open Dental is installed — not a workstation that opens patient records via Citrix/RDP. Setup → Advanced Setup → API is admin-only; your OD admin user may need to be logged in.

STEP 5

Click Add Key

The API Setup dialog shows an empty API Keys table. Check the Enabled box at the top, then click Add Key at the bottom-left.

Tip Two Enabled checkboxes exist in this flow. The one in step 5 is the dialog-level setting at the top of the API Setup dialog. The one in step 6 is the row-level checkbox inside the API Keys table after you've added your key. Both must be checked.

STEP 6

Paste your key and click OK

A smaller Assign API Key dialog opens. Paste the key from step 3 into the Enter API key field and click OK. Back in the API Setup dialog, check the row's Enabled column, then click Save.

STEP 7

Back in DentBooks: Test connection

Return to DentBooks. Tick I added the key in Open Dental and checked Enabled, then tap Test connection. On success, DentBooks starts backfilling your last 12 months automatically.

Tip Backfill runs in the background — about 30 seconds per month. You can close DentBooks and check back in 5–10 minutes; the Practice Health tab activates as snapshots arrive. If Test connection fails: re-check both Enabled boxes, confirm you clicked Save in OD, then tap Test connection again.
